First Look at the New GFC V2 MAX Launch Edition Camper

With somewhere around 1000 nights in our V2 Go Fast Camper, exploring some of the most remote back roads of North America over the past three years, its safe to say that we’re pretty familiar with what these campers are capable of. So when Graeme from GFC asked us to take out his truck with the new V2 MAX Launch Edition camper and share our thoughts on it, we couldn’t wait to put it to the test.

We had an absolute blast camping and ripping dirt roads in this thing (for science and research of course) and we can adamantly say that this new camper is a game changer!

Where we are coming from

One of the biggest reasons we’ve stayed in a GFC after countless nights and thousands of miles is: it’s never held us back. We’ve built our rig around being simple and efficient: nimble off-road, with just enough space to live comfortably. That said, we’ve often wished for a little more room.

Our GFC never holds us back from reaching spots like these

When we picked up our camper in 2022, it was as bare bones as it gets and the setup we have today definitely didn’t happen overnight. It took months of tinkering, problem-solving, and creative custom solutions for things like our solar wiring, Starlink, and gear organization. It works, but it’s been a labor of love and a pretty big undertaking, which thankfully we enjoy anyway.

Side-by-Side Comparison

Our V2 camper is a standard length on a 1st Gen Tundra, while the MAX we tested is an XL (slightly wider) mounted on Graeme’s Raptor. The trucks are certainly different, but regardless of standard or XL width, the MAX camper is 18 inches longer than the V2 which is immediately noticeable in terms of livability.

First Impressions

More Room = More Livable

That extra 18 inches of length may not sound like much, but it changes everything. The MAX feels significantly more spacious and comfortable, especially if you’re considering longer trips or even full-time travel like us. It’s not just about comfort. It changes what’s possible with how you can use the space day-to-day.

Integrated Solutions = Huge Time and Energy Savings

Having things like wiring, lighting, and organization options already in place saves a huge amount of time and energy compared to starting from scratch. At the same time, the camper still leaves plenty of room for customization depending on the kind of build out you want to create.

Our Favorite Features

Constant Pass-Through

Being able to move between the bed (upstairs) and the truck bed (downstairs) without moving transform-a-floor panels around makes this camper feel so much more livable. With the 20” pass-through, one person can stay in bed fully stretched out while the other person gets up which is huge for comfort and convenience. When living in such a small space together, having every little bit of extra space really counts.

So much more living space in the MAX!

Not only this, but the constant pass-through allows you to climate control the whole space overnight which is something we currently can’t do in our setup. If we happen to be somewhere really cold, we’ll briefly run an electric space heater while we are getting ready for bed but as soon as we get in bed and close off the downstairs with the transform-a-floor, we just rely on lots of warm clothes, our double sleeping bag and shared body heat with our dog Greta. We can make it work, but being able to heat the whole space overnight would open up so many more possibilities for camping and exploring comfortably in colder weather.

Pre-Wired for Solar & Starlink

One of the most common questions we get about our set up is how we did our wiring for our solar and electrical. We’ve spent so much time dialing in our rig, coming up with creative custom solutions and thankfully Brian enjoys the tinkering too. But the MAX solves it with cleaner wiring, better cable routing, and it even comes with the option for a super efficient 200W solar panel. That’s one less thing to research, figure out, and install.

The electrical pass-through port where solar and Starlink wires can enter the camper

Wires can be neatly hidden behind the molle panel from where they enter the camper

We’re still running the gen 2 Starlink which we deploy on the roof of our GFC each time we set up camp. The cable runs from the dishy, down the outside of our tent, and into the camper through the end of our side panel, through our buildout to our router. Our rear latch on the side panel has to stay open to let the cable in which has never been too much of an issue but certainly isn’t ideal. Being able to have clean routing of our Starlink cable through the bulkhead and have our router mounted on the molle panel would be so nice!

Molle Panel Bulkhead

Cleaner organization and easier access for tools and accessories

The addition of the molle panel bulkhead is so nice and we wish that we currently had it in our truck. Its a perfect spot for hiding wires and mounting accessories, tools, or electronics especially since the pre-wired port comes into the camper right behind this panel. GFC also made the molle panel structural, replacing the need for the triangular front braces, giving you lots of room behind the molle panel to more easily install accessories and run electrical wires. Normally, we aren’t big on the “tactical” feel of molle, but it just makes so much sense for organization in this application.

Other noteworthy features

A few smaller details stood out right away:

  • Handles – A simple but welcome upgrade, especially on the rear panel. We’d love to see an option above the rear door and even inside the side panels for easier closing.

  • Tensioning bungee – Makes closing the tent faster and smoother, and even seems to help with tent stability in the wind.

  • Headliner + storage bag – The headliner helps with condensation, insulation, and light-blocking, while the included storage bag finally solves our years-long hunt for a good solution.

  • Integrated lighting kit – Red, white, or dual-color modes built right in. Reliable, functional, and one less thing to figure out.

Final Thoughts

Overall, we’re really impressed with the V2 MAX. It’s more spacious and livable without sacrificing off-road performance and comes with thoughtful solutions that save serious time and energy. So whether you’re a weekend warrior, growing family, or full-time dirtbag vision-questing down dirt roads in South America, we think the V2 MAX will make your experience so much better!
